Maksu expands its portfolio with BANKpay+, bringing built-in, fully owned Account-to-Account Payments to European Merchants

July 29, 2026

Maksu, a European Payment Institution licensed by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA), today announced the expansion of its payment portfolio with BANKpay+, a built-in, fully owned Account-to-Account (A2A) payment solution for online merchants across Europe.

BANKpay+ will be fully integrated into Maksu’s Online Payments platform, allowing online businesses to offer bank-based payments alongside existing cards and wallets through a single setup. It can also be deployed as a standalone A2A product for direct integration into existing checkouts.

“Card networks will always be a cornerstone of global commerce, but relying on a single payment method shouldn’t be a business’s only option. BANKpay+ complements existing setups, giving merchants more ways to optimize their payment costs and more payment choices alongside cards and wallets. For certain markets or high-value purchases, a direct bank payment simply makes more sense. This option also helps businesses keep processing costs efficient, settle funds faster, and offer the exact mix their customers prefer” said Vlado Galevski, Founder and CEO at Maksu.

“For merchants, this means more checkout choice, greater flexibility, and the ability to meet local payment preferences without adding complexity. For their customers, it means a familiar, secure, and seamless way to pay directly from their bank account,” added Vlado.

A frictionless, localized customer journey

At checkout, consumers simply select their country and preferred local bank, authenticating the transaction via their standard mobile or online banking application.

Depending on the market and regional banking infrastructure, the solution dynamically supports:

  • Direct bank authentication
  • Secure IBAN-based account connections
  • QR-code-enabled payment flows

Once authorized, funds are initiated instantly, and the user is redirected to the merchant with immediate confirmation.

Expanding the portfolio matrix

BANKpay+ integrates into Maksu’s VPOS platform, which encompasses card processing, digital wallets, alternative payment methods (APMs), fraud prevention, and unified reporting. This matrix allows merchants to scale their payment mix dynamically based on regional consumer behavior.

“Account-to-Account payments aren’t about replacing cards. They’re about filling a clear gap in the European checkout landscape,” said Rene Kapusta, who built and developed Bankpay+ for the last five years, and now joins Maksu as Head of Alternative Payment Methods.

“Every market has its own payment culture, and every transaction type has its own ideal flow. With BANKpay+, we’re giving merchants an efficient, bank-backed alternative that works seamlessly alongside the methods they already offer. It’s a simple equation: customers get to pay using the banking apps they already trust, and businesses get a practical tool to reduce transaction costs and improve cash flow,” Rene added.

The solution is immediately available for online merchants across Europe operating within the SEPA zone, with a particular focus on cross-border e-commerce and markets with high baseline adoption of bank-based payment methods.

As online commerce continues to evolve past rigid, card-only models, the addition of BANKpay+ reflects Maksu’s broader commitment: building simple and flexible payment infrastructure that gives businesses more control and fewer operational barriers. By focusing on cross-border flexibility and bottom-line efficiency, Maksu is ensuring that European merchants can scale seamlessly while delivering the best possible payment experience and preferred ways to pay to their consumers.
