Maksu Granted Payment Institution License by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA), enabling EU-wide Payment services

Vienna, May 6, 2026
Maksu, a Vienna-based Online Payments Provider built on more than 25 years of payment technology heritage through Modirum, is pleased to announce that it has officially been granted a Payment Institution License by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA).
Vienna, Austria, May 6, 2026
Under the EU’s Payment Services Directive (PSD2), this authorisation enables Maksu to provide regulated payment services across all EU markets without the need for additional local licenses, strengthening its position as a fully compliant, trusted European payment partner for merchants of all sizes.
This achievement enables Maksu to deliver merchants a comprehensive suite of in-Europe online payments services, including card processing, payment initiation, account-based payments, and emerging digital payment methods tailored for modern commerce, all under one EU-regulated framework.
A rigorous licensing journey
Obtaining a Payment Institution license from the FMA involves an extensive regulatory assessment covering governance, financial soundness, security, risk management, operational processes, and leadership stability.
Maksu successfully completed all steps of this demanding process – including the required “Fit & Proper” examinations, demonstrating strong alignment with European regulatory standards. The approval reflects months of coordinated work between Maksu’s leadership, technology, legal, and compliance experts, and the FMA.
Commenting on the approval, Vlado Galevski, CEO of Maksu, said:
“Securing our Payment Institution license is a major step not only for Maksu, but for the broader European payments landscape. The market demands trusted, Europe-based partners who combine regulatory strength, technological depth, and a clear commitment to reducing complexity for merchants. This license enables us to meet that need with even greater responsibility and scale.”
“Merchants, particularly micro, small, and medium merchants, continue to face rising fees, strict and fragmented regulations, and friction at checkout. With this license, we can address these challenges head-on by delivering streamlined, compliant, and efficient payment services across all EU markets. Our goal is to simplify what has traditionally been difficult: secure payments, predictable costs, and consistent approval performance across borders.”
“The milestone marks the beginning of the next phase of Maksu’s strategy – building a more resilient, transparent, and merchant-centric European payment ecosystem. For a long time, enterprise-grade payment infrastructure has been complex, costly, and difficult for micro, small, and medium-sized merchants to access. Maksu aims to close that gap – removing friction, strengthening trust, and making advanced, compliant, and scalable payment solutions accessible to businesses of every size across Europe. Because when payments work flawlessly, merchants can focus on what truly matters – serving their customers. And great retail needs great payments – fast, safe, and frictionless. The future will accept nothing less.”
